Jos Verstappen slams Schumacher’s Mercedes contract claim

The Formula 1 paddock loves a good contract conspiracy, but Jos Verstappen has zero patience for backyard gossip – especially when it comes from Ralf Schumacher.

The former driver turned pundit recently set the rumor mill spinning by suggesting that Toto Wolff’s public courtship of four-time world champion Max Verstappen had culminated in a deliberately insulting, low-ball financial offer designed to fail.

Speaking on the German Backstage Boxengasse podcast, Schumacher laid out his theory on why a blockbuster Mercedes switch for the current Red Bull driver had gone cold.

“There’s no spot at Ferrari right now,” Schumacher told the podcast. “And at Mercedes, you hear that Wolff has made him an offer behind the scenes. But that offer was apparently so bad financially that it’s not an option anyway.

“It doesn't matter. But I think that's intentional because, again, I've said it before: why would Toto Wolff, if everything goes as planned, bring in an expensive Max Verstappen alongside Kimi Antonelli, the future superstar?"

Jos fires back

Schumacher’s speculative breakdown painted a picture of calculated low-balling to protect Mercedes’ next-gen prodigy, Kimi Antonelli – who currently leads Verstappen by 101 points in the 2026 championship standing.

However, Jos Verstappen wasted no time completely shutting down the narrative, treating the claim with absolute disdain.

Taking directly to social media to stamp out the fire before it could spread further, Verstappen Sr. fired a blunt, public warning under an Instagram post quoting the German pundit's claims: “Ralf, again you bring wrong information.”

With Red Bull enduring a turbulent start to the 2026 campaign, Max Verstappen’s long-term future remains the sport’s most polarizing topic.

Performance clauses in his contract could trigger an early exit if he isn't in the top two by the summer break.

But while the paddock hyper-analyzes every backroom meeting, the Verstappen camp is making it clear that they will not let outsiders control the narrative with false economic tallies.
