British GP: Antonelli beats Ferrari duo to Silverstone pole position

Kimi Antonelli strengthened his Formula 1 title charge by claiming a commanding pole position for the British Grand Prix, leading a Mercedes front-row challenge as Ferrari emerged as the Silver Arrows' closest rival at Silverstone.

The championship leader produced a superb final Q3 lap to secure his fifth pole position of the 2026 season, edging Charles Leclerc after both drivers found significant improvements on their final flying laps.

It marked Antonelli's first pole since Monaco and ensured Mercedes remained unbeaten in Grand Prix qualifying this year.

Ferrari briefly threatened to end that remarkable run after Lewis Hamilton stunned the field with Sprint pole on Friday, but Antonelli answered emphatically.

Fresh from his Sprint victory earlier on Saturday, the Italian completed a perfect day by once again delivering when it mattered most.

Antonelli delivers under pressure

After the opening Q3 runs, George Russell looked poised to challenge his team-mate after slotting into second place, while Leclerc and Hamilton sat just behind.

But the decisive final laps turned the session on its head.

Antonelli extracted even more performance from his Mercedes to cement pole position, while Leclerc vaulted ahead of Hamilton and Russell to claim a front-row start.

Hamilton improved on his final effort but gained only a tenth of a second, leaving him third, while Russell's final attempt unravelled completely as he lapped more than half a second slower than Antonelli to slip to fourth.

The result completed an impressive turnaround for Antonelli, who had already demonstrated his race pace by defeating Hamilton in the Sprint just hours earlier.

Ferrari leads the chase as McLaren struggle

Behind the leading quartet, the gap to the rest of the field was substantial.

Isack Hadjar continued his impressive form by qualifying fifth for Red Bull, comfortably ahead of McLaren's Lando Norris, whose team endured an unexpectedly difficult afternoon. Max Verstappen could manage only seventh after complaining of problems with his power unit deployment, while Oscar Piastri battled persistent grip issues to salvage eighth.

Racing Bulls once again emerged as the standout midfield team, with Arvid Lindblad and Liam Lawson securing ninth and tenth respectively.

Earlier in Q2, Antonelli had already laid down a marker despite running off track on his opening attempt, eventually topping the session ahead of Leclerc, Hamilton and Russell. Norris scraped through in ninth, while Piastri recovered from the elimination zone after his first run.

Midfield fight proves fiercely competitive

The battle for the final Q3 place went down to the wire, with Audi's Gabriel Bortoleto missing out by just 0.032 seconds to Lawson after apologising to his team for leaving time on the table.

Pierre Gasly qualified 12th ahead of Nico Hulkenberg, while Oliver Bearman reached Q2 but could do no better than 14th, frustrated by what he believes is a Haas package that has slipped behind its midfield rivals. Williams' difficult weekend continued with Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon only 15th and 16th.

Q1 was heavily influenced by gusting winds around Silverstone. Russell survived an early trip through the gravel after locking up at Luffield and damaging his front wing before recovering to reach Q2.

Franco Colapinto was less fortunate, spinning heavily through the high-speed Maggotts-Becketts section on his final run to remain 19th. Bortoleto also overcame an early gearbox scare to progress after initially reporting he could not engage sixth gear.

Esteban Ocon exited in Q1 after being outqualified once again by Bearman, while the struggling Aston Martin pair joined Colapinto, Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez at the rear of the grid.
