Hungaroring Speed Trap: Who is the fastest of them all?

The Hungaroring is historically a circuit where surgical balance and high downforce reign supreme over outright grunt.

Yet, with overtaking traditionally at a premium around this twisting, 4.381 km layout, having serious legs down the main pit straight into Turn 1 remains one of the ultimate trump cards in a driver’s arsenal.

Alpine showed impressive straight-line muscle during qualifying, with Franco Colapinto and Pierre Gasly topping the speed trap charts in their A526s. Championship leader Kimi Antonelli followed close behind in third, but the Mercedes driver held only a razor-thin top-speed advantage over poleman Lando Norris in his upgraded McLaren.

Over at Ferrari, qualifying produced a stark mismatch against pre-weekend expectations. Neither Lewis Hamilton nor Charles Leclerc could summon the pace to challenge for the top spot, with a noticeable maximum speed deficit against both Mercedes and McLaren perhaps a key factor in their shortfall.

Despite missing out on pole, the Scuderia remains firmly in the fight. With Leclerc lining up on the front row alongside Norris, Ferrari’s victory hopes are very much alive – though turning potential into silverware will demand flawless execution, out on the track and from the pit wall.

Adding to the intensity, Sunday at the Hungaroring promises classic high-summer conditions: hot, sunny, and dry. Soaring track temperatures will put thermal degradation at the forefront, potentially turning a straightforward race into a fascinating tactical puzzle.

Pirelli’s simulations reveal that a one-stop and a two-stop strategy are currently neck-and-neck in terms of total race time due to higher-than-anticipated tyre wear that has effectively leveled the two options, leaving teams free to tailor their game plans based on the remaining fresh rubber in their allocations.

The One-Stop Route: Given the relentless traffic and inherent difficulty of passing here, many pit walls may still lean toward a single pit stop. In this scenario, starting on the C4 Medium before swapping to the durable Hard compound between laps 26 and 32 stands out as the default path.

The Two-Stop Alternative: For those who manage to carve out a comfortable pit window – or those desperate to use the power of the undercut to break free from dirty air – a two-stop strategy offers a potent offensive counter.
