Italian GP: Gasly conquers maiden F1 pole with Monza shocker!

Pierre Gasly produced a sensational qualifying upset at Monza, claiming the first pole position of his Formula 1 career and handing Alpine a remarkable Saturday afternoon triumph on the scene of his maiden Grand Prix victory.

The Frenchman edged Mercedes favourite George Russell by just 0.060 seconds in a breathtaking Q3 finale, denying the Briton a fifth pole of the season and turning Alpine's biggest moment of the weekend into a genuine statement.

Russell appeared to have pole firmly in his grasp after opening Q3 with a 1m21.929s, putting him ahead of Oscar Piastri, Gasly and Charles Leclerc. But with the entire top 10 separated by less than two tenths, Monza's famous tow became the difference-maker.

Mercedes had prepared carefully for the slipstream battle, with Kimi Antonelli — already condemned to the back of the grid by an engine penalty – tasked with giving Russell a crucial aerodynamic boost around the 5.8km circuit.

Gasly found an answer of his own. The Alpine driver latched onto Lewis Hamilton's Ferrari and extracted everything from his final lap, vaulting ahead of Russell when it mattered most.

Piastri qualified fourth ahead of Leclerc, Hamilton and Max Verstappen. Antonelli was seventh but will drop to the back, promoting Franco Colapinto to seventh.

The session was particularly frustrating for McLaren. Norris could manage only ninth after missing out on a tow from Piastri, whose own lap unravelled when he ran wide at Turn 1. Both McLaren drivers had struggled under braking there, while Piastri is also expected to face an investigation over an alleged block on Liam Lawson.

Arvid Lindblad impressed again to qualify 10th and will start ninth after Antonelli's penalty.

Ferrari survives a Q2 scare

Ferrari endured a nervy middle phase, with Hamilton initially stranded in the elimination zone after appearing to encounter traffic at the worst possible moment. Leclerc was also only ninth, leaving neither driver ideally placed to help the other.

Leclerc failed to improve, but Hamilton dug deep to find another half-tenth and squeezed into Q3 by just 0.001s ahead of Audi's Gabriel Bortoleto.

Oliver Bearman took 12th with Haas' upgraded car and power unit, while Lawson was eliminated in 13th. His failure to reach Q3 also deprived Verstappen of a potential tow. Lawson will nevertheless join Antonelli on the final row because of his own engine penalty.

Nico Hulkenberg, Carlos Sainz and Esteban Ocon completed the Q2 exits.

Q1 had already delivered its share of drama, with Gasly setting the pace ahead of Verstappen and Norris. Yuki Tsunoda, standing in for Lawson at Racing Bulls, was eliminated in 17th after failing to produce a clean lap.

Sainz escaped by 0.139s, helped by a crucial tow from Williams team-mate Alex Albon, who himself languished in 18th.

At the rear, Cadillac comfortably outqualified Aston Martin, with Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez ahead of Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll. Alonso was unable to complete his final attempt after a Honda power unit problem.

Yet neither Aston Martin will start from the last row. That unwanted distinction belongs to Antonelli and Lawson – leaving Gasly with a golden opportunity to turn his Monza pole into another unforgettable chapter.
