Ocon's frustration boils over in Baku: ‘I don’t deserve all this sh*t’

The Azerbaijan weekend had offered Esteban Ocon something he has been painfully short of this season: a Haas that finally seemed to be working as it should.

Then, right when the Frenchman looked ready to turn that rare opportunity into his first Q3 appearance of 2026, Baku found another way to kick him in the teeth.

Ocon will line up 14th on Saturday after his final Q2 effort was compromised by yellow flags, leaving him 0.333s short of the cut-off despite having shown enough pace to suggest a place in the top ten was within reach.

For a driver already worn down by a season in which, by his own account, inconsistent car performance has dogged him in 10 of the first 15 rounds, the latest setback felt almost cruelly familiar.

A Q3 chance disappears in an instant

Unlike much of the campaign, Ocon had no complaints about the underlying performance of his VF-26 in Baku. The Haas had responded to the improvements made by the team, and for once he had a genuine shot at breaking into Q3.

Instead, his final run was disrupted when Arvid Lindblad went off, forcing Ocon to back off around Turn 15.

“Unbelievable,” Ocon said. “We were on for a Q3 lap, the car was working well.

“You know, we don't have many chances like this when the car is working well – it hasn't been working throughout the whole season. We improved things, but we had a Q3 car today.”

The frustration was compounded by the fact that Ocon had already lost time to a gust of wind on the previous lap, yet was still on course for a competitive effort.

When the yellow flags appeared again, there was little he could do other than lift and accept another chunk of lost time.

“The yellow flag, basically. I got a gust of wind the lap before, but I was on for a Q3 lap as well. And then I did the same lap time, again arriving to Turn 15.

“I don't know who went off, but I had to back off on the exit to make sure that I was not going to get any penalty. And I did exactly the same lap time. So I lost, what, three, four tenths with that?

“Unbelievable. You know, I just have no words. It's ‘different race weekend, same shit’, you know. It's always something going on, on my side, if it's either the car, if it's something else, yellow flag, safety cars, whatever. But I don't deserve all the shit that I have on my back at the moment. So, I don't know. I might need to take a good shower.”

'It's never happening'

While Ocon was left wondering what might have been, team-mate Oliver Bearman emerged with 11th, giving Haas its strongest qualifying result since the Chinese Grand Prix.

With Haas weighing up its driver options for 2027, Ocon's increasingly bleak assessment of his situation carried an uncomfortable finality.

“We need to fight in the top 10 tomorrow now, because we are 14th, we are not in the top 10,” Ocon concluded. “At the end of the day, yes, we were competitive, but we can't get there. Never. It's never happening.”
