Azerbaijan GP: Russell beats Verstappen after frantic Baku finale

George Russell turned pole position into victory at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix on Saturday, resisting two late safety-car interruptions and a charging Max Verstappen to claim his third win of the 2026 season.

The Mercedes driver had dominated Friday's qualifying session by eight tenths and looked equally imperious over race distance. Even two safety-car periods transformed what had been a controlled afternoon into a tense finale, Russell keeping his composure to secure his first victory since Austria in June.

Verstappen finished second, while Arvid Lindblad marked his return from injury with a sensational podium for Red Bull. Charles Leclerc was fourth, with Kimi Antonelli recovering brilliantly from 16th on the grid to finish fifth.

Russell controls the opening phase

Russell made a clean getaway from pole and comfortably held the lead into Turn 1, while Oscar Piastri immediately relieved Charles Leclerc of second place.

Starting on mediums while his closest rivals opted for softs, Russell was never seriously threatened as the low-grip Baku circuit proved relatively gentle on tyres. With degradation proving manageable, the race quickly settled into a straightforward one-stop contest.

Behind Russell, however, McLaren struggled to keep the Red Bulls at bay. Piastri and Lando Norris — who had moved ahead of fourth-place starter Isack Hadjar — were vulnerable on Baku's long straights and especially through the traction zone leading onto the circuit's enormous 2km blast.

Verstappen eventually moved ahead of Pierre Gasly and then Norris, while Hadjar also dispatched the McLaren. The Dutchman began to suffer with tyre graining, however, preventing him from immediately mounting a serious attack on Piastri.

Baku erupts after the first safety car

The race's carefully established rhythm disappeared on lap 30 when Alex Albon crashed at Turn 5. The Williams driver locked up while battling Esteban Ocon for 13th and hit the TecPro barriers, fortunately escaping unhurt.

With the frontrunners yet to make their sole stops, the safety car triggered a rush through the pit lane. Russell emerged still ahead of Piastri, Verstappen, Hadjar, Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, while Norris' excursion into Turn 1 dropped him to ninth behind Gasly and Antonelli.

The real drama arrived six laps later.

At the second restart, Franco Colapinto locked up at Turn 1 and collided with Alpine team-mate Gasly, collecting Norris in the process. Antonelli narrowly avoided the wreckage, while further back Lindblad sent Liam Lawson into a spin. The resulting chaos brought out another safety car.

Russell led Verstappen, Piastri, Hadjar and Leclerc at the second restart, but Piastri's afternoon then unravelled when he ran deep into Turn 1 while defending from Hadjar, surrendering a likely podium finish.

Russell withstands Verstappen

The double neutralisation transformed Russell's comfortable advantage into a nervous sprint to the flag, with Verstappen suddenly within striking distance.

But the Mercedes driver held firm.

Russell and Verstappen ran almost side-by-side in the final drag race towards the chequered flag, yet Russell kept his nose ahead to seal a hard-earned victory.

Hadjar completed the podium on his return from injury, while Leclerc followed in fourth.

Antonelli's recovery from 16th was equally significant. The championship leader had reached eighth before the first safety car and then gained further ground amid the Turn 1 carnage, passing Hamilton for fifth.

Lindblad finished seventh, although his result remained subject to investigation over his contact with Lawson. Ocon and Oliver Bearman brought both Haas cars home in eighth and ninth, while Carlos Sainz salvaged the final point for Williams despite his heavily upgraded car.

Both Aston Martins failed to reach the finish yet again, while Valtteri Bottas ended Cadillac's afternoon in the wall on the final lap.

Russell's victory cuts Antonelli's championship advantage by 15 points, leaving the Mercedes team-mates separated by 66 points heading into next weekend's Bahrain Grand Prix, hosted by Malaysia.
