Rossi ready to race Verstappen in GT3 – but expects ‘big trouble’

A motorsport crossover of titanic proportions is set to unfold as MotoGP icon Valentino Rossi and four-time Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen prepare for an exciting showdown at Portimão this weekend.

The Red Bull charger will make his official debut in the GT World Challenge Europe as the series’ season finale takes place around the rolling Algarve International Circuit.

Verstappen will be back behind the wheel of his Team Verstappen Mercedes-AMG GT3 alongside Chris Lulham and Ben Barnicoat, and that crew will be sharing the grid – among other front-runners – with the #46 Team WRT BMW of Rossi, Max Hesse and Neil Verhagen.

Verstappen’s appearance comes amidst an intense stretch that sees the Dutchman competing across seven consecutive weekends between two F1 triple-headers, and following his dominant Grand Prix wins in Malaysia and Singapore.

For Rossi, who successfully transitioned to GT racing after nine MotoGP world titles, going wheel-to-wheel with modern open-wheel royalty represents both a thrill and a unique challenge.

"It's going to be amazing," the Italian told Sky Sport Italy. "I mean, it will be a big problem because he’s sure to be incredibly fast, but it will be fantastic.

"I have to say, I never imagined I’d be racing towards Max Verstappen. So it’s great, it’ll be great for everyone to have him there, and I hope I get the chance to follow him and see how he drives.”

‘I hope I do not see him’

While racing fans worldwide eagerly anticipate two legendary figures sharing the circuit, Verstappen enters the weekend maintaining his trademark focus.

Speaking at Sepang recently, the Dutchman shared mutual respect for "The Doctor," while making his competitive goals abundantly clear.

"Yeah, I hope I get to see him," Verstappen said regarding Rossi. "He’s a very cool guy, so I hope to catch up with him. I mean, it’s nice, but I do not hope to see him in the race, so that’s normally a good sign.

"I actually hope to see no one, to be just up front and do a good job. But you never know. The grid is super competitive, so I’m just looking forward to the challenge.
"It’s very different to Formula 1, but I love it. I mean, I had my first taste already this year at the Nordschleife, and Portimão is a very cool track to drive.

“So I’m just going to enjoy it and, of course, as a team, we’ll try to do the best we can to get a good result out of it.”

How to watch?

The event schedule features two practice sessions and qualifying on Friday, leading into Saturday’s main GT World Challenge Endurance Cup Race.

The race will start at 6pm CET (5pm UK ).

Fans around the world can stream the entire race weekend for free in multiple languages via the official GTWorld YouTube channel.

Whether Verstappen dominates from the front or ends up trading positions with Rossi in the pack, Portimao is set to deliver an unmissable spectacle as two generations of racing greatness meet on track.
