Red Bull has made a long-term statement of faith in Laurent Mekies, handing its team principal a contract extension that keeps him at the helm until the end of 2031 as the Milton Keynes outfit attempts to turn its latest resurgence into another championship-winning era.
The Frenchman’s new deal commits Red Bull to at least six more seasons under his leadership, following his appointment in July 2025 as the successor to Christian Horner, whose two-decade reign ended abruptly last year.
The timing is particularly striking. The announcement comes just a day after Horner questioned in an interview with The Guardian whether Red Bull had lost the rebellious, nonconformist spirit that once set it apart from Formula 1’s established giants – a pointed assessment of the organisation now led by Mekies and CEO Oliver Mintzlaff.
Red Bull, however, is forcefully backing its current team principal rather than dwelling on its past.
“I am incredibly proud to continue this journey with Oracle Red Bull Racing,” said Mekies.
“I would like to thank Chalerm [Yoovidhya, shareholder], Mark [Mateschitz, shareholder], and Oliver [Mintzlaff, CEO], the entire team and everyone involved for the trust they have placed in the project.
“What makes this team special is the way everyone comes together in pursuit of the same goal, and I feel privileged to work alongside such a talented and committed group every day.
“Together, with Pierre Wache’s and Ben Hodgkinson’s teams playing a central role in shaping our future, we have a strong platform for the years ahead.
“We genuinely believe this is only the beginning. As we look ahead, we will continue to embrace the principles that define us: being free in our thinking, fast in our actions and bold in our decisions.”
Mekies arrived at Red Bull after a spell running sister outfit Racing Bulls, having previously spent six years at Ferrari, where he held sporting director and racing director positions.
His promotion came during a turbulent period for the reigning powerhouse, but the Frenchman has overseen a gradual recovery from a difficult start to the 2026 campaign under the sport’s new technical regulations.
Red Bull’s development push has begun to pay dividends, with Max Verstappen winning the last two Grands Prix in Malaysia and Singapore from pole position. The team has consequently closed to within seven points of third-placed McLaren with six rounds remaining.
That turnaround gives the contract extension an immediate sporting backdrop. Rather than making a short-term appointment while the team navigated its difficulties, Red Bull has now committed to Mekies well into the next decade.
Mintzlaff was emphatic in his endorsement of the man tasked with steering that recovery.
“Laurent has demonstrated outstanding leadership since returning to the Red Bull family,” said the Red Bull CEO.
“He combines technical expertise, strategic thinking, and a deep understanding of what makes our team successful.
“Just as importantly, he embodies the values and mentality that define the Red Bull way: courage, teamwork, determination, and an unrelenting desire to compete at the highest level.
“Continuity in leadership is a key ingredient for sustained success, and we are delighted that Laurent will continue to lead the team through the next chapter of our journey.”
The decision also strengthens the impression of a Red Bull organisation seeking stability after a period of upheaval.
Verstappen committed his own future to the team in August, signing a deal that runs through the end of 2030 and ending speculation over a possible departure.
In 2027, the Dutchman will continue to partner Isack Hadjar, whose promotion was confirmed last month, giving Red Bull a defined driver line-up as it plans for the seasons ahead.
So overall, Red Bull’s message is clear: it is backing Mekies to shape the next chapter on his own terms.
Whether he can preserve the maverick mentality Horner claims has faded while maintaining the team’s competitive revival will be one of the defining tests of his extended tenure.
