Perez misses Mexico GP fan event in fresh F1 illness scare

Sergio Perez's homecoming weekend has suffered an unwelcome setback, with the Mexican becoming the third Formula 1 driver to be struck down by illness ahead of the Mexico City Grand Prix.

The Cadillac driver was forced to withdraw from Friday's Fan Forum at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, disappointing thousands of supporters who had gathered hoping to catch a glimpse of their local hero just hours before the opening practice session.

The timing could hardly be worse. Perez is celebrating his 300th Grand Prix start this weekend, a significant milestone he would undoubtedly have wanted to mark in front of his home crowd. Instead, he has been forced to put his immediate commitments on hold and concentrate on recovering.

There is, however, some reassurance for Cadillac and its Mexican supporters: the team insists that his participation in the remainder of the weekend, including both Friday practice sessions, is not affected.

Cadillac gives Perez time to recover

In a statement released ahead of the opening track action, Cadillac confirmed that Perez would miss the fan event, apologising to those who had turned out to see him.

“Checo Pérez will unfortunately be unable to attend today’s Fan Forum at his home Grand Prix due to illness. Both he and the team apologize to all the fans who have come out to see him,” the team said.

“Checo and the team has taken the decision to allow him additional time to rest and recover this morning, ahead of today’s on-track sessions.

“His participation in the remainder of the race weekend, including FP1 and FP2, is not affected.

“Teammate Valtteri Bottas will fulfill all media duties and take part in Free Practice 2 today as planned.

“We thank our fans for their understanding and support and look forward to seeing you on track.”

The wording suggests Cadillac is keen to avoid unnecessary alarm, although Perez's condition will inevitably attract attention given the circumstances surrounding the opening days of the Mexican weekend.

A worrying pattern across the paddock

Perez's absence also adds another name to an increasingly uncomfortable list of drivers dealing with illness in Mexico.

Soon-to-be world champion Kimi Antonelli and Cadillac’s Valtteri Bottas had already been forced to miss Thursday's media commitments, with the former suffering from a viral illness and the latter also reported to be unwell.

Both were nevertheless expected to take part in Friday's on-track activities.

The growing number of cases has inevitably raised questions about the physical toll of Formula 1's demanding schedule.

With 23 rounds on the 2026 calendar and the paddock navigating a punishing sequence of triple-headers, the strain is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.

For Perez, the immediate priority is getting back to full fitness before the weekend slips away. His homecoming was supposed to be a celebration. Cadillac will be hoping this brief interruption does not turn into something considerably more disruptive.
