Antonelli reveals Senna tribute lid after ‘emotional’ family visit

Kimi Antonelli’s first Sao Paulo Grand Prix as Formula 1 world champion will carry a personal touch, with the Mercedes driver unveiling a special Ayrton Senna tribute helmet for this weekend’s race at Interlagos.

Fresh from sealing his maiden title in Mexico City, the 20-year-old arrives in a country where Senna remains an enduring hero.

Antonelli has long regarded the great Brazilian driver as an inspiration, and his latest gesture brings that admiration into sharp focus.

The one-off helmet takes its cues from Senna’s famous design, incorporating the yellow, green and blue of the Brazilian flag. Antonelli revealed it during Thursday’s media day, making clear that the tribute means more than a change of colours for a race weekend.

“This one means a lot to me,” Antonelli posted on Instagram. “My special helmet for the weekend! A tribute to my idol and Brazil. I hope you guys like it as much as I do.”

The timing gives the gesture added resonance. Antonelli became the youngest world champion in F1 history with his third-place finish in Mexico, reaching the championship summit at just 20.

A day he will remember forever

On Tuesday, Antonelli visited Fazenda Dois Lagos, the Senna family estate, accompanied by his father Marco and welcomed by Senna’s nephew Bruno and nieces Bianca and Lalalli.

The visit offered a rare glimpse into the private spaces where Senna had lived, as well as the chance to sit in the Lotus 98T he raced in 1986. Antonelli shared a photograph from the cockpit and described the experience as an "unforgettable day".

"I was truly emotional," the Italian said. "A very, very special day, a day that I will remember forever.

“That's why I will always be thankful and grateful towards the Senna family for allowing me to see that, and to even sit in the car, which was very special.

"It was an amazing day. I actually didn't want to leave. I tried to stay as long as I could there, because it was such a nice experience.

“The Senna family was very open about showing places where Ayrton used to spend most of his time. It was crazy to think.

"When I was there, I was like, 'Wow, Ayrton was actually here. He was spending time in his room.' It was very emotional and a very, very special day."

For Antonelli, the experience brought his childhood hero closer than any photograph or racing memory could. He arrives at Interlagos with a world title secured, but also with a deeply personal reason to make this weekend special.
