Sainz gets gearbox penalty after Saturday crash

Carlos Sainz will take a five place grid penalty for today's Canadian Grand Prix as a result of a gearbox change.

The Toro Rosso driver hit the Wall of Champions during Q2 on Saturday, damaging the right rear corner of his car before the front was also pitched against the wall. Unable to continue, Sainz dropped out in 16th place but gained a position on the grid as a result of team-mate Daniil Kvyat's three place grid penalty for causing a collision in Monaco.

However, Toro Rosso has been forced to change the gearbox as a result of the accident, which means Sainz will receive an automatic drop of five places on the grid.

The penalty means Sainz will start from 20th on the grid ahead of only Marcus Ericsson, who also had a three place grid penalty for colliding with team-mate Felipe Nasr in Monaco. Kevin Magnussen will start from the pit lane after missing qualifying due to a heavy crash in FP3.

Kvyat, Jolyon Palmer, Pascal Wehrlein, Felipe Nasr and Rio Haryanto all move up a position on the grid as a result.
