Button suggests Rosberg put his head down

McLaren driver Jenson Button distilled some wise advice to Nico Rosberg, recommending the German keep his views under his helmet and put all his energy into out-driving his Mercedes team mate.

Button is familiar with matters of intern rivalry with Hamilton, having spent three seasons at McLaren on the other side of Lewis' garage, although the pair enjoyed a relatively healthy relationship and even performance on the track.

"Talking in the press about something you are unhappy about only makes Lewis stronger,” said Button. "He's a very competitive individual when his head is in the right place. It is about toppling him in other areas."

Hamilton clearly has the upper hand over Rosberg since the start of the season, something the German evidently appears unsettled about, with Button suggesting things will only get worse if Hamilton's dominance is left unchecked by his team mate.

“Over one lap, I don’t think anyone is quicker, but over a race ? Maybe. It is about engineering a way around Lewis to get an edge on him. That is the area where you have to work on."

"You can only rattle him by beating him," Button concluded," and for every race Lewis wins it is only going to get worse."

Motor racing was a backdrop from the outset in Phillip van Osten's life. Born in Southern California, Phillip grew up with the sights and sounds of fast cars thanks to his father, Dick van Osten, an editor and writer for Auto Speed and Sport and Motor Trend. He was an early contributor to the monthly French F1i Magazine, often providing a historic or business perspective on Formula 1's affairs. In 2012, he co-authored along with fellow journalist Pierre Van Vliet the English-language adaptation of a limited edition book devoted to the great Belgian driver Jacky Ickx. He also authored "The American Legacy in Formula 1", a book which recounts the trials and tribulations of American drivers in Grand Prix racing. Phillip is also a commentator for Belgian broadcaster Be.TV for the US Indycar series.
