F1 teams to work on 'comprehensive' sustainability proposal

The FIA says "a comprehensive proposal to ensure the sustainability of the sport" will be refined by all ten F1 teams in the coming weeks.

A meeting of the Strategy Group on Thursday saw an independent consulting company propose a number of cost-cutting measures to safeguard the future of the sport. With only six teams - Ferrari, Mercedes, Red Bull, McLaren, Williams and Force India - part of the Strategy Group, there was an agreement to discuss the a proposal with the remaining teams to try and finalise a solution.

"In light of the various scenarios presented by the independent consulting company mandated by the F1 Strategy Group, at the initiative of the FIA, to work on the reduction of costs and following a constructive exchange, a comprehensive proposal to ensure the sustainability of the sport has emerged," the FIA said.

"The Strategy Group member teams have committed to refine it in the next few weeks, in consultation with the other teams involved in the championship."

The proposal to introduce a fifth engine this season was rejected, while plans to allow teams free choice of tyre compounds in 2016, as well as to bring back refuelling and reduce lap times significantly in 2017 need to be finalised for approval by the F1 Commission.
