Kvyat: Hungaroring ‘a little bit too narrow’ for F1

Daniil Kvyat thinks this weekend’s Hungarian Grand Prix features a track that is “probably a little bit too narrow” for F1, but still labels the circuit “a lot of fun”.

The Russian sophomore experienced a trying start to his 2015 campaign, which led some to claim Kvyat had been promoted to Red Bull too soon. But the 21-year-old has been putting strong performances and consistently challenging established team-mate Daniel Ricciardo since Monaco.

Coming off a solid British Grand Prix weekend where he finished sixth in tricky conditions, Kvyat hopes to carry the momentum forward at Budapest, a very technical venue he's always liked.

“I really used to enjoy it in Formula Renault 2.0 but it’s probably a little bit too narrow for modern Formula One cars,” said Kvyat. “But still, in qualifying it really makes you push to the limit. You’re right on the edge and you never get a rest during the lap. I think that’s the biggest characteristic of the circuit.

“It is pretty challenging. You need to hit every apex right, don’t make any mistakes in your line selection, it’s quite a difficult one to get right but I do find it to be a lot of fun.”

A permanent fixture on the F1 calendar since 1986, the Hungaroring has also gradually become a popular circuit across the different junior categories. And Kvyat is no stranger to success along the banks of the Danube River.

“I was on pole and won there in Formula Renault 2.0 in 2012 and was on the podium in GP3 in the feature race, so I’ve got pretty good memories of racing here.”
