Daniel Ricciardo - News:

Daniel Ricciardo - Bio:

Daniel Ricciardo is the latest in a long line of proud Australian drivers to compete in Formula One that includes two former world champions in Jack Brabham and Alan Jones, and most recently Mark Webber who preceded Ricciardo at Red Bull Racing.

Ricciardo's rise to global motorsports fame started with karting at the age of nine. As a teenager he moved into the Western Australian (and eventually national) Formula Ford championships. His performances were strong enough to win him a scholarship in the Formula BMW Asian championship in 2006 with Eurasia Motorsport, which saw him finish in third place in the championship with two wins to his credit.

The rapidly rising Ricciardo headed to Europe and clinched his first title in 2006 in Formula Renault 2.0 WEC followed by the British Formula 3 Championship the following year. That attracted interest from Formula One teams and in 2010 he combined a campaign in the Formula Renault 3.5 Series with test driver duties for Scuderia Toro Rosso as a member of the Red Bull junior team.

Ricciardo made his Formula One debut at Silverstone in 2011 with the short-lived HRT squad, and the following season Toro Rosso promoted him to a full-time race seat alongside Jean-Éric Vergne. When his compatriot Webber retired from Formula One at the end of 2013, Ricciardo was selected to replace him in the senior Red Bull squad alongside four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel.

Ricciardo's maiden season at Red Bull saw him claim eight podium positions and his first win in Montreal, which was quickly followed up by two more victories in Hungary and Spa-Francorchamps for third place overall in the 2014 championship. However problems with engine power coupled with the dominant rise of Mercedes gave Ricciardo few opportunities for similar success after that, and Ricciardo now finds hims position at the team under threat from the phenomenal rise to stardom of Max Verstappen who joined him at Red Bull five races into the 2016 season.

Ricciardo finished the 2016 season in 3rd, with a win in Malaysia the high point of a season which included the infamous Monaco pit stop and strategic errors at the Spanish Grand Prix that would see him lose out to teammate Max Verstappen.

By 2018 Ricciardo was facing challenges internally at Red Bull Racing, a crash with teammate Max Verstappen in Baku a definite low point of the season. It came a surprise to the entire paddock when Ricciardo signed with Renault for the 2019 and 2020 seasons but perhaps to Ricciardo the decision to move was made a long time before, when it became clear to him that Verstappen would take priority within the team.

2019 sees Ricciardo paired with Hulkenberg, a benchmark to whom he will be keen to impress against as he hopes to bring Renault to the front of the grid.
