In light of Robert Kubica's with Renault at Valencia this week, Alex Zanardi believes the Polish driver could possibly return to Formula 1.

Zanardi is a man who knows all about bouncing back in the face of physical adversity. The 50-year-old was at the peak of his career in IndyCar in 2001 when a horrific crash at the Lausitzring led to the amputation of both his legs.

Undeterred, Zanardi eventually returned to racing, winning in touring cars before focusing on paralympic cycling and clinching gold medals in the London Paralympics in 2012.

"I read that he did more than 100 laps, so he would be able to make a return to the sport," Zanardi told the Corriere della Sport, commenting on Kubica's F1 test.

"And in my opinion, it was not a random thing that Renault let him test the car.

"I hope he does (return), because he is a very good driver, a very good person, a very nice guy, and it would of course be a great story," Zanardi added.

Phillip van Osten

Motor racing was a backdrop from the outset in Phillip van Osten's life. Born in Southern California, Phillip grew up with the sights and sounds of fast cars thanks to his father, Dick van Osten, an editor and writer for Auto Speed and Sport and Motor Trend. Phillip's passion for racing grew even more when his family moved to Europe and he became acquainted with the extraordinary world of Grand Prix racing. He was an early contributor to the monthly French F1i Magazine, often providing a historic or business perspective on Formula 1's affairs. In 2012, he co-authored along with fellow journalist Pierre Van Vliet the English-language adaptation of a limited edition book devoted to the great Belgian driver Jacky Ickx. He also authored "The American Legacy in Formula 1", a book which recounts the trials and tribulations of American drivers in Grand Prix racing. Phillip is also a commentator for Belgian broadcaster Be.TV for the US Indycar series.
