Red Bull Racing was delivered the start no team wants when Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen collided on the first lap of the Hungarian Grand Prix.
After the Aussie passed his team mate on the exit of Turn 1, a frustrated Verstappen tried to force the issue and reclaim his spot.
The Dutchman locked up into Turn 2 while on the inside of Ricciardo and understeered into his helpless team mate, causing immediate terminal damage and a discouraging walk back to the pits for the Honey Badger.
As punishment for his impetuous move, Verstappen was handed a 10-second time penalty but that was no consolation for a very disappointed Ricciardo.
"There's not much else to say," said the despondent Red Bull driver.
"I had a good run out of Turn 1, there was a bit going on, I saw Valtteri on the inside, I could break a bit later on the outside so I thought I could just go here and protect that place. And then I felt the hit.
"It was amateur to say the least, just frustrating. It's not like he was trying to pass, there was no room. Valtteri was in front, I was on the outside, so there was no room.
Ricciardo pointed towards Verstappen's attitude as the source of his ill-inspired move.
"I don't think he likes obviously when a team mate gets in front of him," Ricciardo added.
"You've got the whole race to try to repair a mistake. The pass was never on. It wasn't even a pass, not even an attempt. It was just a very poor mistake."
There will obviously be some heated discussions in the Red Bull camp following the incident.
"Obviously the team will do their bit and I'll do mine. There shouldn't be too much but for sure we'll sort it out.
