Ford motorsport boss: 'Never say never to Formula 1'

Ford motorsport boss Mark Rushbrook says the cost of racing in Formula 1 is currently too high, but he's keeping a watchful on developments nevertheless.

Rushbrook admits the sport's hybrid era technology has drawn his interest, and he would take a closer look if F1 brings down the cost of competing significantly.

"Hybrid power will be relevant for a long time for Ford," he told Autocar.

"So I’d never say never to Formula 1, especially if it introduces budgets."

The Ford executive viewed as essential the introduction of a budget cap in Grand Prix racing, but still sees a potential for costs spiraling out of control, because "cost reduction in F1 is all relative. If you cap in one area, [manufacturers] will spend in another".

Ford financed the legendary Cosworth DFV in 1967, an engine which phased in an era of huge development and success for Formula 1.

In 2000, the US automotive manufacturer acquired the Stewart Grand Prix team, but competed under the Jaguar name until 2005 when it sold its F1 assets to Red Bull.

Ford Motorsport's current main involvement remains in the World Endurance Championship, with its FORD GT program, and in the World Rally Championship with the 2017 WRC-winning squad M-Sport.
