FIA appoints Michael Masi as Australian GP race director

Following the sudden passing early this morning in Melbourne of Charlie Whiting, the FIA has announced that Australian Supercar deputy race director Michael Masi will fulfill the role of F1 race director this weekend.

Whiting, F1's resident race director since 1997, suffered a pulmonary embolism in Melbourne, leaving the F1 community in shock from the 66-year-old's passing.

"In accordance with Article 11.9.3b of the FIA International Sporting Code, the Sporting Regulations shall hereby be amended to reflect Mr Michael Masi as the Race Director, Safety Delegate and Permanent Starter for this Event," said the FIA in a statement.

Masi was on the panel of FIA Stewards that served at last year's Chinese Grand Prix, and he was also the chair of the Stewards for last weekend's Formula E round in Hong-Kong.

Masi's responsibilities will go beyond just pressing the green button on Sunday. He will be in charge of the race's officials and the overall management of the Australian GP.

Furthermore, as the FIA Safety delegate, he will oversee all safety matters and ensure that regulations are applied in conformity with the rule book.

Haas team boss Guenther Steiner suggested to his fellow team principals that everyone do their best to help the FIA in its task this weekend and "cause as little trouble as possible".

"We are here to make it happen for the people that need to step in, because these are big shoes that need to be filled," said Steiner.

"In the end we'll find a solution, there will be meetings to make sure nothing goes through the cracks.

"What we will be doing is supporting whatever the FIA puts in place for this weekend.

"Whatever solution they come up with we will support it and try to make the best out of it. "For this weekend our aim is: if they need our help, we're here to help."
