Are McLaren and Fernando Alonso going their separate ways?

Reports have emerged alleging that McLaren and Fernando Alonso have ended their partnership together, over a month after the pair's disastrous attempt to qualify for the Indy 500.

According to Motorsport Magazine, McLaren and Alonso have no further plans to collaborate in the future and are parting on amicable terms.

While the two-time world champion left Formula 1 at the end of last season, Alonso remained affiliated with McLaren has a brand ambassador but also as a driver, testing the Woking-based outfit's MCL34 in Bahrain earlier this year and taking part in the 103rd running of the Indianapolis 500.

Contrary to 2017 when McLaren's entry at the brickyard was managed by Andretti Autosport, the papaya squad tackled the blue riband event on its own this year.

However, the effort was a comedy of errors that ended in qualifying when Alonso was unable to make the 33-car field.

After terminating his stint with Toyota in the WEC with a second win at the Le Mans 24 Hours, Alonso's agenda for the remainder of the year is unknown, although it is rumored to potentially involve preparations and tests with Toyota for an onslaught on Dakar rally raid.

There has been no official confirmation from either McLaren or Alonso on the pair's alleged parting, but the team did recently say that there were no immediate plans or projects involving the two parties.

"Fernando, like all McLaren drivers past and present, will always be part of the McLaren family and we have a strong relationship with him," said a McLaren spokesman.

"We have no plans to run him in any further F1 test sessions this year as our focus remains on both Carlos and Lando.

"He is free to pursue other opportunities in motorsport and we would support him in doing so."
