Michael Schumacher's family pays tribute to Jean Todt

The family of F1 legend Michael Schumacher has paid tribute to former FIA president Jean Todt and to the Frenchman's twelve-year tenure at the helm of motorsport's governing body.

Todt ceded his presidential role with the FIA last week to newly elected president, Mohammed ben Sulayem.

The 75-year-old's legacy is one of safer roads positive action on the motorsport front, and especially regarding Formula 1 for which the FIA oversaw the introduction in 2018 of the mandatory Halo cockpit safety device which has since been deployed across almost all single-seater series.

Earlier in his career, Todt's reign at the helm of the Ferrari team between 1994 to 2007 led to a fruitful collaboration and to a close friendship with Michael Schumacher that produced five consecutive Constructors' and Drivers' titles.

To this day, Todt remains close to the Schumacher family and is among the rare individuals authorized to visit the incapacitated seven-time world champion.

"Celebrating a man who has always had a vision and a great heart," read a statement from the Schumacher family's account on Twitter.

"Jean, you made your mark in the world of motorsport and you are an inspiration for many around the world and for our family in your fight for road safety.

"We are proud to have you at our side, and we are proud to remain at your side in your life's next chapter. Here's to more time together. Love from the entire Schumacher family."

Todt responded to the homage with a heartfelt short message: "I love you forever".

He was an early contributor to the monthly French F1i Magazine, often providing a historic or business perspective on Formula 1's affairs. In 2012, he co-authored along with fellow journalist Pierre Van Vliet the English-language adaptation of a limited edition book devoted to the great Belgian driver Jacky Ickx. He also authored "The American Legacy in Formula 1", a book which recounts the trials and tribulations of American drivers in Grand Prix racing. Phillip is also a commentator for Belgian broadcaster Be.TV for the US Indycar series.
