Sainz and Perez receive new gearboxes for Monaco GP

Ferrari and Red Bull have opted to change the gearbox assemblies on the cars of Carlos Sainz and Sergio Perez ahead of Sunday's Monaco GP following the pair's run-in in qualifying.

Perez crashed in the closing stages of Saturday's shootout at the Portier corner. As the Red Bull was stranded on the track, it was collected by Sainz as he entered the corner, the Ferrari driver unable in the circumstances to avoid the Mexican.

Red Bull swapped the transmission on Perez's RB18, while Ferrari undertook a precautionary change on Sainz's F1-75.

"After examining Carlos’ car after yesterday’s crash and given the force of the impact, we have decided to change the gearbox as a precaution," Ferrari said.

"Naturally, the parts of the rear end that were damaged have also been changed. These changes are penalty-free."

Ferrari likely learned a valuable lesson from last year when it opted not to change the gearbox assembly on Charles Leclerc's car after the Monegasque's crash in qualifying.

The local who was due to start on pole, suffered a failure on his way to the grid.
