Domenicali in talks with promoters for F1 return to Kyalami

Formula 1 chief executive Stefano Domenicali is reportedly in South Africa to hold talks with local notables over a potential return of the sport to Kyalami.

Domenicali traveled to South Africa right after Sunday's Azerbaijan Grand Prix to meet with Warren Scheckter, the nephew of 1979 F1 World Champion Jody Scheckter and the man leading his country's efforts to revive its F1 heritage and to a Grand Prix back to Kyalami.

Scheckter has been at the forefront of South Africa's plans to stage a round of the F1 World Championship for several years. But Liberty Media's interest in gaining a foothold on the African continent has ramped up recently.

According to RacingNews365, Domenicali will hold talks early this week with politicians and local officials to evaluate the viability of putting a race in Kyalami on F1's calendar as soon as 2023!

Although Kyalami is the historical home of the South African Grand Prix, with 22 F1 races held at the venue, the track has transformed itself over the years.

But the modern version of the circuit would require additional infrastructure changes to upgrade its FIA status from 2 to 1 and make it eligible to host a Grand Prix.

A return to Kyalami in 2023 seems very optimistic, not to mention that such a plan, should it come to fruition for next year, would once again call into question the future of other F1 races.

F1 has added Las Vegas to its 2023 schedule as a third race in America along with Austin and Miami, but three races – Monaco, France and Spa-Francorchamps – yet to contract with F1 beyond this year.
