Former CART stars to duke it out in Mexican GP support event

A group of former CART IndyCar stars will come together to entertain fans in a Legends Cup at next week's Mexican Grand Prix.

The support event will celebrate the days from 2002 to 2007 when the Champ Car series - America's premier single-seater championship – raced at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez .

Local heroes Adrian Fernandez, Mario Dominguez, Michel Jourdain Jr, Roberto Gonzalez and Luis Diaz will be joined by the likes of Paul Tracy, Mark Blundell, Alex Tagliani, Oriol Servia, Max Papis, Bruno Junqueira and Casey Mears to race onboard the 500hp V8-powered machines that take part in the Gran Turismo Mexico Series.

The 53-year-old Tracy, who won the Champ War World Series in 2003, is the only driver to have won a round of the series in Mexico City.

The Canadian triumphed in 2003 while Junquiera was on pole for the event at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez the previous year, in 2002.

“Before hosting Formula 1 in Mexico, we used to promote the Champ Car World Series at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez and it was as big as F1 [those] days,” said Federico Gonzalez, the director of the Mexican Grand Prix.

“Being able to reunite all these legends together for a one-time only event here in Mexico is a huge privilege for us and for the Mexican fans.”

Qualifying for the Legends Cup will take place on Saturday at 1:45 pm local time while the race will be held on Sunday, before the Mexican Grand Prix, at 11:05 am.
