Williams has confirmed that former DTM champion Paul di Resta will serve as its official F1 reserve driver for the 2016 season.
The Scotsman, who took 58 grand prix starts for Force India from 2011-13, is replacing Adrian Sutil in the role. Di Resta will spend extensive time with the British team at races to familiarize himself with the Mercedes-powered FW38. The 29-year-old will also be given some simulator sessions as part of his preparations.
“I am delighted to be joining Williams as reserve driver and look forward to the 2016 season,” Di Resta said upon the announcement.
“It will be a busy year combining both driving in DTM with Mercedes, and attending the Formula One grands prix in my new reserve driver role. I will be giving my full support to both and look forward to the exciting possibilities the year has ahead.
“I would like to thank Claire [Williams] and Williams for the opportunity to be part of the team.”
Speaking about Di Resta’s appointment, the Williams deputy team principal added: “We are delighted to welcome someone with Paul’s experience to the team. Having competed in 58 Formula One races throughout his career Paul’s racing knowledge will be invaluable.
“We are also confident that given his recent Formula One and current DTM experience Paul will be able to confidently step into the FW38 and assist with our 2016 campaign.”
Williams now has two DTM racers on its roster, with ex-McLaren test driver Gary Paffet enrolled as a simulator driver last month.
