Domenicali: Honda commitment validates F1 sustainability plans

Formula 1 chief executive Stefano Domenicali hailed Honda's partnership with Aston Martin as "great news" for the sport and as a validation of its approach towards sustainability.

From 2026, upon the advent of F1's next-generation power unit regulations, Aston Martin will switch its allegiance from Mercedes to Honda.

The partnership will open up a new crucial chapter in Aston's history in F1, one that the Silverstone-based outfit hopes will take it to the front of the grid from where it will tackle its championship ambitions.

The deal will also ensure the presence on the grid from 2026 of six engine manufacturers – Honda, Mercedes, Ferrari, Red Bull Powertrains-Ford, Renault and Audi.

Domenicali was among the first to congratulate Aston and Honda on the "exciting news".

"It is great news for Formula 1 that Honda will partner with Aston Martin to supply power units from 2026," said F1's CEO in the wake of Wednesday's announcement.

"This is further evidence that our global platform and growth provides brands with huge potential, and it also shows that our plans to move to sustainable fuels in 2026 is the right approach to offer the automotive world alternative solutions to decarbonise the planet.

"We can all see the incredible commitment Aston Martin has made to our sport and we can't wait to see the exciting partnership in action, and I want to congratulate both parties on this exciting news."

Motor racing was a backdrop from the outset in Phillip van Osten's life.
