Rio Haryanto has been hit with a grid penalty before his first qualifying session in F1.
The first Indonesian driver in F1 was involved in a collision with Romain Grosjean in the pit lane at the start the final practice session at the Australian Grand Prix.
Romain Grosjean was released from his garage and pulled in to the pit lane just as Haryanto was creeping out of his own garage, but the Manor was slow pulling away and drove in to the side of the Haas as it came past.
The two cars were tangled in the pits and had to be pulled apart, with Haryanto needing a new front wing and Grosjean requiring a new floor.
Following an investigation by the stewards, Haryanto was hit with a three place grid penalty and two penalty points.
"The driver of car 88 left the team garage and did not pay attention to the approaching car which was in the fast lane."
Haryanto went on to qualify 21st, marginally ahead of team-mate Pascal Wehrlein with Manor already aware of the penalty before the session.
