Alpine ready to offer ‘guard of honour’ farewell to Ocon

Alpine team principal Oliver Oakes has opened the door for Esteban Ocon to return to the team’s Enstone factory for a proper farewell, following the Frenchman’s early exit from the team after the Qatar Grand Prix.

Ocon was sidelined from Alpine’s season finale last weekend in Abu Dhabi, a decision that was reportedly part of quid pro quo solution instigated by the team’s executive advisor Flavio Briatore.

The Italian was willing to allow Ocon to run with Haas, his new team, in F1’s post-season test at Yas Marina that took place earlier this week, but only if he agreed to relinquish his seat to rookie Jack Doohan for the final race of the year.

While Ocon agreed to the deal, he made clear that his early ousting was a disappointment.

“It’s not how I wanted things to end,” Ocon said after his final race in Qatar, publicly apologizing to Alpine staff for missing the chance to say goodbye in person at the team’s factories in Enstone and Viry-Châtillon.

Despite the circumstances, Oakes extended an olive branch to Ocon. Speaking to the media in Abu Dhabi, the Briton was candid about the situation.

“Yeah, Esteban can have a guard of honour, he’s got to come by. I’m actually serious,” Oakes said.

“People say that [it wasn’t ideal], but I think it’s not really right. I think at the end of the day, he had an option, he chose to start with his new team earlier. That’s fine, I’m cool with that.

“We’ve been texting, and if I’m honest he’s welcome to come to Enstone, if he’d like, like everything was planned.”

Oakes also praised Ocon for his contributions to Alpine, emphasizing the respect he holds for the Frenchman.

“I’ve also been really honest that he’s been a big part of the team, not just in previous years, but even in my short stint,” the Briton added.

“I have a lot of admiration for him, but I think also we have to do what’s right for us. And getting Jack in the car earlier, it’s a big advantage when we look to next year.”

Oakes was pragmatic about the decision to give Doohan an early start, noting its strategic importance as Alpine looks ahead to 2025.

“And really, the teams we’re fighting, they’ve all got rookies who have a bit of experience under their belt and, for me, it may seem a little bit harsh, but that isn’t the reason at all,” he said.

Meanwhile, Ocon has already settled into his new role at Haas, completing 119 laps at Yas Marina during post-season testing on Tuesday.

He will team up in 2025 with rising star Oliver Bearman as Haas looks to climb the grid.

While Ocon may no longer don Alpine’s blue and pink colors, Oakes’ invitation underscores the mutual respect and goodwill between the Frenchman and the team, leaving the door open for a fitting farewell at Enstone.
