Mercedes set the pace on Friday as Ferrari struggled, with Sebastian Vettel stopping after ten laps of FP2 with an electronic issue. It was later confirmed that Vettel will also have a five-place grid penalty following qualifying due to a gearbox change.

The German had struggled during FP1 with two spins, while a number of other drivers - including Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button - also spun due to the low grip conditions in Sochi. Hamilton did recover to set the fastest time of FP2 but team-mate Nico Rosberg failed to get a clear supersoft lap and it remains to be seen what his true pace is.

Red Bull and Williams looked closely matched throughout Friday in the fight to be best of the rest, while McLaren also got both drivers in to the top ten in second practice and will be hoping to build on that encouraging start during the final hour before qualifying.
