Red Bull motorsport advisor Helmut Marko is taking a keen interest in on one of Formula 2’s most promising names – 19-year-old Irishman Alex Dunne.
The teenager, who only days ago parted ways with McLaren’s young driver programme, has suddenly become one of the hottest properties in the junior racing scene, and Marko says that he will soon engage with the young gun.
“He’s a very aggressive driver, he has fantastic car control, and he’s fast,” the Austrian said. “So that’s what Red Bull likes, and of course we will have discussions with him [now he’s free].”
The move comes at a fascinating crossroads in Dunne’s young career. Previously regarded as a cornerstone of McLaren’s next generation, Dunne’s prospects inevitably dimmed as the team committed to long-term contracts for its current Formula 1 stars, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri.
With the pathway to an F1 seat blocked and differences emerging over his future direction, Dunne and McLaren amicably went their separate ways – opening the door for rivals to make their move.
Enter Marko, Red Bull’s long-serving motorsport advisor and the architect of the team’s ruthless yet successful talent conveyor belt.
Known for his sharp eye and even sharper decision-making, Marko wasted no time signalling his intention to reopen talks with Dunne.
It’s a move that could reshape the young Irishman’s career trajectory – and potentially add another name to Red Bull’s ever-growing roster of prodigious young racers.
Asked what Red Bull’s immediate plan for Dunne might be, Marko kept his cards close to his chest but made clear that Dunne’s upcoming F2 performances could prove decisive.
“He doesn’t have a super license, so let’s see. There are two more races in F2. Let’s see what he can achieve,” Marko said.
Dunne's journey from karting phenom to F2 podium chaser has been a whirlwind, marked by British F4 glory, a near-miss in Italian F4, and runner-up finishes in GB3.
Now, with McLaren in the rearview and Red Bull's growing interest, the Dubliner's poised for a plot twist that could catapult him toward F1's glittering grid. But Marko's endorsement isn't handed out lightly – it's a golden ticket laced with the pressure to perform.
As the final F2 showdowns loom in Qatar and Abu Dhabi, all eyes are on Dunne to deliver the chaos Marko craves.
