Red Bull motorsport advisor Helmut Marko is taking a keen interest in on one of Formula 2’s most promising names – 19-year-old Irishman Alex Dunne.
The teenager, who only days ago parted ways with McLaren’s young driver programme, has suddenly become one of the hottest properties in the junior racing scene, and Marko says that he will soon engage with the young gun.
“He’s a very aggressive driver, he has fantastic car control, and he’s fast,” the Austrian said. “So that’s what Red Bull likes, and of course we will have discussions with him [now he’s free].”
McLaren’s Door Slam
The move comes at a fascinating crossroads in Dunne’s young career. Previously regarded as a cornerstone of McLaren’s next generation, Dunne’s prospects inevitably dimmed as the team committed to long-term contracts for its current Formula 1 stars, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri.
With the pathway to an F1 seat blocked and differences emerging over his future direction, Dunne and McLaren amicably went their separate ways – opening the door for rivals to make their move.

Known for his sharp eye and even sharper decision-making, Marko wasted no time signalling his intention to reopen talks with Dunne.

Asked what Red Bull’s immediate plan for Dunne might be, Marko kept his cards close to his chest but made clear that Dunne’s upcoming F2 performances could prove decisive.
“He doesn’t have a super license, so let’s see. There are two more races in F2. Let’s see what he can achieve,” Marko said.
