Mercedes has announced a significant shift in its technical leadership, confirming that veteran designer John Owen will depart the team during the 2026 season.
After nearly two decades at the heart of the Brackley-based squad, Owen has decided to step away from the sport to take a sabbatical.
Owen’s tenure spans the most dominant era in modern racing history. Since joining the outfit in 2007 during its Honda era, he remained a constant through the team's transition to Brawn GP – where he served as principal aerodynamicist during their fairytale 2009 title run – and finally into the Mercedes factory era.
As Director of Car Design, he oversaw the creation of 17 different challengers, including the foundational machines that secured eight consecutive Constructors' Championships between 2014 and 2021.
The team confirmed that Owen’s exit will be a phased transition. He is set to remain in his post for several months to help integrate his successor before beginning a period of gardening leave later this year.
"We wish John all the very best for the future and thank him for the considerable role he has played in the team's success," Mercedes said in an official statement released Tuesday morning.
The void left by Owen’s departure will be managed through a strategic internal reorganization rather than an outside hire.
Giacomo Tortora, who currently serves as Engineering Director, has been tapped to step into the role of Director of Car Design.
To ensure technical stability during the handover, Deputy Technical Director Simone Resta will take on the responsibility of overseeing the design department.
As Mercedes prepares for the 2026 regulations, the departure of the man responsible for every Silver Arrow since the marque's return to the grid marks the end of a definitive chapter in the team's history.
While Owen prepares for his break from the paddock, his final contribution – the W17 – will serve as his parting legacy to the team he helped build into a powerhouse.
