Perez banking on ‘big package’ in Austria to move Cadillac forward

Sergio Perez believes Cadillac could finally break into Formula 1’s fiercely competitive midfield battle, with the American team preparing a major upgrade package that could transform its fortunes in Austria.

The American manufacturer arrived in the sport with ambition and excitement, but the harsh reality of racing among motorsport’s elite has been a relentless learning curve.

Race after race, the team has found itself rooted near the back of the field, still searching for the breakthrough that could transform promise into performance.

Now, however, Sergio Perez believes that breakthrough may finally be within reach.

The Mexican driver has revealed that Cadillac is preparing a substantial upgrade package for the Austrian Grand Prix, a development he hopes will propel the team into the second tier of F1’s fierce midfield.

After months of gathering data and uncovering weaknesses, Perez sees encouraging signs that Cadillac is moving in the right direction.

Understanding the problem

While Cadillac remains the only manufacturer yet to score a point this season, recent performances have offered glimpses of progress. The team has begun to edge away from Aston Martin in outright pace on some weekends, even if race-day execution continues to expose lingering flaws.

One issue, in particular, has become impossible to ignore as Perez explained.

“Whenever we have a stint longer than 15 laps, we seem to struggle a lot with a massive cliff,” he said, quoted by Crash.net.

The dramatic tyre degradation has repeatedly undermined Cadillac's competitiveness, turning promising runs into frustrating setbacks.

Yet Perez insists the team is no longer searching blindly for answers.

“We understand pretty well where that is coming from, and we have a pretty good idea on where to fix it and how, but it will just take a few races from now,” he added.

“The good thing is that we know, and obviously, Barcelona is the greatest place to show you where you are lacking, so that was a positive for us.”

The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya has long been regarded as one of Formula 1's most demanding testing grounds, exposing weaknesses in car balance, tyre management and overall efficiency.

For Cadillac, the lessons learned there may prove invaluable as development accelerates.

Austria upgrade sparks optimism

In a new-era season shaped by sweeping technical regulations, fortunes can change quickly. Teams that introduce effective upgrades can make significant leaps up the order, as rivals have already demonstrated during the campaign.

Cadillac is hoping to be next.

Perez believes the extensive data gathered from race weekends, combined with a relatively reliable car on his side of the garage, has given engineers a clearer understanding of what needs to change.

“It’s good information for the team. We just have to make sure that we are able to come out on top, and we are bringing a big package for Austria. I hope that will bring us into the midfield group,” he explained.

That statement may be the clearest indication yet that Cadillac sees Austria as a pivotal moment in its inaugural season.

Still, Perez is realistic about the scale of the challenge ahead. When asked whether the incoming package would completely eliminate the problems that surfaced in Spain, his answer was immediate.

“No. It will not solve it,” he made clear. “It will improve it though, and I think we are looking forward to…hopefully, Silverstone will be the place that we will resolve it.”

For a team still searching for its first points and its first true breakthrough, patience remains essential.

But after months of frustration, Cadillac finally appears to have a roadmap. Austria could provide the first major step forward. Silverstone may bring another.

And if Perez's confidence proves justified, the Formula 1 midfield could soon have a new contender knocking on its door.
