According to Italy's Gazzetta dello Sport, Ferrari's 2017 challenger is expected to deliver in excess of 1000bhp, a power figure unseen since the good old turbo days of the 80s.

In its bid to bridge the gap with Mercedes, the Scuderia's engineers are apparently pulling out all the stops and working in a new direction with regard to its power unit.

Code-named '668', the car is scheduled to be presented on February 24. In addition to mandatory aerodynamic changes in line with 2017 regulations, Ferrari has focused its resources on redesigning the internal combustion component of the power unit.

Ferrari is rumored to have included a new multi-jet ignition system engineered in partnership with the Mahle technology company. The unit will produce an increase in power and make better use of the MGU-H which is connected to the turbocharger for energy recovery.

Under the watchful and expert eye of Mattia Binoto, the technical group in Maranello has also devised a new gearbox for the '668', departing somewhat from the 2016 concept of mounting the rear suspension between the differential and the gearbox

The design helped provide a  narrow rear suspension but was not very efficient in maximizing traction at the rear axle.

Ferrari President Sergio Marchionne has obviously put his troops under pressure to deliver in 2017 and make the most of the new regulations. A few surprises should be expected when the veil is pulled back on February 24.
