Esteban Gutierrez announced in Mexico City today that he will be making his Formula E debut in his country's round scheduled later this year on April 1.

The 25-year-old Mexican lost his seat at Haas to Kevin Magnussen and was looking to remain at the pinnacle of motorsport.

But with options drying up, he appears to be steering his career, at least for now, towards the burgeoning all-electric series.

Gutierrez did not specify which team he would be racing for but he could be joining Jay Penske's Future Dragon Racing outfit in place of Loic Duval.

It is unsure whether the former Sauber and Haas driver could eventually enter the Buenos Aires event, the third round of the series which will take place on February 18.

The addition of another Formula 1 racer to the series managed by FE boss Alejandro Agag will likely boost its prospects as the category slowly but surely gains momentum.

As a reminder, last October Mercedes announced that it had taken an option to enter Formula E in its fifth season, in 2018/19.
