Vandoorne would only consider a return to F1 if 'conditions are favourable'

On the verge of an exit from Formula 1, Stoffel Vandoorne would only return to the pinnacle of motorsport in the future if he is offered favorable conditions.

It's been two difficult seasons for the young Belgian who failed to live up to the hype his impressive credentials garnered in the lower formulae has produced.

A victim of McLaren's dismal period of under-performance, the 26-year-old aspires to finding success beyond the F1 paddock, with Mercedes perhaps offering Vandoorne a life-line through its involvement in Formula E.

"Breathing in some new air will make me feel good," he told Belgian broadcaster RTBF, as he hinted about his impending move to the all-electric series.

"The last seasons at McLaren were not easy, and the team had its worst years ever."

Many may see Vandoorne's case in formula 1 as permanently settled. Indeed he may himself believe that his chances of a return to the big time are remote.

But if ever an opportunity does arise, it will have to meet the right criteria.

"Somehow I will try to stay in touch with Formula 1," Vandoorne said.

"Exactly how I don't know, but if I ever return, I won't just do anything. No, it must be with favourable conditions."
