Pérez and his crew committed an unforced error in Q1 when they didn’t notice the improving track conditions. With this gnawing at him, Sergio started the race with the bit between his teeth. He avoided the struggling Magnussen, benefited from Alonso’s retirement and took care of the Williams and Sainz all before half-distance. He caught up to his team mate and gained ground on Grosjean, but ran out of laps.
