Force India’s Sergio Perez tells F1i it is “his dream” to have another crack at driving for a top team after his first attempt at McLaren did not pan out.
Following a couple of promising seasons with Sauber, the Mexican joined Woking in 2013 but was dropped with just two races left in his debut campaign for the British squad.
Perez then bounced back at Force India, where he secured a podium in only his third Grand Prix. Although the 25-year-old feels “happy” where he is right now, the ex-Ferrari protégé equally admits he would like to return to a front-running outfit.
“Definitely, it’s my dream,” Perez told F1i during an exclusive interview. “I want to become a world champion and it’s what I’m looking for; the big opportunity, obviously, to be in a position to be able to win the title.
“When I was at McLaren it was just two years ago but two years in Formula One you grow in many areas. I learned a lot, I’m a more complete driver and I’m sure if I had the opportunity now with a big team I’m sure I can do the job and perform well against anyone.
“So I’m confident in my driving and I’m driving well. I’ve had maybe two or three races during the year where I haven’t taken the maximum out of the car but in general I think I have been performing quite well.”
Perez currently occupies 13th in the Drivers’ standings, 11 points and four places behind highly rated team-mate Nico Hulkenberg, while Force India holds on to fifth in the Constructors’ race.
