New engine elements send Norris to the back of the grid

Lando Norris will join Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel at the back of this afternoon's German Grand Prix grid following a series of engine component changes for the McLaren driver.

Norris - who qualified 16th in Saturday's session after encountering a battery pack issue - sees his Renault engine fitted with a new MGU-K, a new energy store (ES) and a new control electronics (CE) element.

For Norris, it's the third element of each component, a tally that puts the Brit over the limit for the year, thus entailing a grid penalty that sends him to the back of the grid.

Furthermore, Vettel, who was already set to start on the last row following his early demise fromn qualifying on Saturday, takes on a new control electronics that also exceeds his Ferrari engine's limit for the season.

Finally, Ferrari has fitted a new ICE, turbo and MGU-H to Kimi Raikkonen's power unit but the changes are within the Alfa Romeo's drivers allowance, therefore safeguarding the Finn against a grid demotion.

Motor racing was a backdrop from the outset in Phillip van Osten's life. Born in Southern California, Phillip grew up with the sights and sounds of fast cars thanks to his father, Dick van Osten, an editor and writer for Auto Speed and Sport and Motor Trend. He was an early contributor to the monthly French F1i Magazine, often providing a historic or business perspective on Formula 1's affairs. In 2012, he co-authored along with fellow journalist Pierre Van Vliet the English-language adaptation of a limited edition book devoted to the great Belgian driver Jacky Ickx. He also authored "The American Legacy in Formula 1", a book which recounts the trials and tribulations of American drivers in Grand Prix racing. Phillip is also a commentator for Belgian broadcaster Be.TV for the US Indycar series.
