Wolff: ‘No silver bullet’ to Mercedes achievements

Mercedes motorsport boss Toto Wolff says the German manufacturer's 2015 success in motor racing does not come down to one miracle solution, but relies on a series of factors that includes “outstanding” team spirit.

Mercedes extended its stunning 2014 form into this year, as it claimed 16 wins and 18 pole positions out of 19 grands prix to retain both Formula One world titles. Mercedes also starred in DTM, with F1 test and reserve driver Pascal Wehrlein taking the honours in the Germany-based touring car series.

Meanwhile, fellow junior Esteban Ocon clinched the GP3 Series title, while Mercedes-powered Felix Rosenqvist won the FIA European Formula 3 championship.

“We've achieved all of our goals this year,” said Wolff, who left Williams for Mercedes in early 2013. “We again won the Formula One drivers' and constructors' world championship with Lewis [Hamilton] and the team.

“In the DTM, we bounced back this year after a tough season in 2014, and the successes of the guys in the other series put the icing on the cake.

“There is no silver bullet in motor racing. You have to make the right decisions and mould the best drivers and engineers into a team. Having the right team spirit is often underestimated, however, but it's especially important.

“Our team spirit was outstanding this year. We all pulled together and, as a team, experienced the most successful motor racing year in the history of our brand.”

Commenting on Mercedes’ achievements, Ola Källenius, a board member of parent company Daimler AG, added: “We've had an incredible motor racing year. Everybody in motor racing is passionately committed to the sport and always wants to triumph, but never in our wildest dreams did we imagine that we would win every series in which we took part this season.

“Motor racing is incredibly important to Mercedes-Benz. Our brand was born on the racetrack, and this year our star shone brightly as never before in the world of motor racing.”
