Wehrlein clinches second Race at Home win - takes series lead

Pascal Wehrlein steered clear of a chaotic Turn 1 pileup in Hong Kong to secure his second consecutive Formula E Race at Home Challenge win and take the overall lead in the online series.

The Mahindra driver led home Mercedes' Stoffel Vandoorne and Panasonic Jaguar Racing's James Calado.

Formula E organisers threw a spanner into the works for drivers in qualifying, adding a wet track to the mix, with Venturi's Edoardo Mortara edging Wehrlein for pole by just 0.01s.

As the field barreled into Hong Kong's Turn 1 hairpin, mayhem ensued when Nyck de Vries hit Oliver Turvey, the pair igniting a multi-car chain reaction that set back Wehrlein to fourth while Calado's decision to remain on the inside pushed him up to second.

Mortara built himself a three-second margin while Wehrlein and Vandoorne quickly recovered from their first lap set-back to set off after the Swiss-Italian racer, only for the latter to hit the inside wall through the first part of the chicane, a mishap that pushed the Venturi charger down to fifth.

Meanwhile, series leader Maximilian Guenther, who had gotten caught up in the Turn 1 chaos, was handed a drive-through penalty for jumping the start.

Adding insult to injury, the BMW Andretti driver then botched his entry into the chicane and fell to 19th where he was eliminated in short order.

At the end of the 15-lap online battle, Wehrlein took the checkered flag with 4 seconds in hand over Vandoorne and 11 seconds over Calado.

Mercedes' de Vries held on to fourth, with Mortara and DS Techeetah's Antonio Felix da Costa rounding off the top six.

After four rounds, Wehrlein leads the Race at Home Challenge with 70 points from Guenther (65 points) and Vandoorne (58 points).
