John Surtees has been appointed a CBE for services to motorsport by the Queen in the New Year Honours List.

The 1964 Formula One World Champion is the only man to have won world championships on both two and four wheels having also secured seven motorcycling world titles between 1956 and 1960.

Having switched to F1, Surtees won the championship for Ferrari before going on to form his own team in 1970 which he continued to run after his retirement from competitive driving two years later.

Surtees was first made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) before being appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2008.

The 81-year-old is made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire as the oldest surviving F1 world champion following Jack Brabham's death in 2014.
