Bottas fastest on day two as Haas problems continue

Valtteri Bottas set the fastest time on the second day of the final test as Haas completed just one lap.

Having been second fastest on the new ultrasoft compound on Tuesday, Bottas posted a lap of 1:23.261 on the supersoft tyre on day two. Bottas' time was just 0.032s slower than his effort from the opening day, and left him 0.3s clear at the top of the timing screens.

Bottas set his time in the afternoon session, usurping Lewis Hamilton who had been quickest at lunchtime following qualifying simulations for Mercedes. Hamilton set his time on the soft tyre like team-mate Nico Rosberg a day before him, but was 0.6s slower than Rosberg's benchmark from Tuesday. The German was then in action in the afternoon session as he carried out a race simulation, with his final tally reaching 91 laps.

Kevin Magnussen wrapped up his four days of testing this pre-season with more high mileage, ensuring he never failed to break the 100-lap barrier. The Dane was quick in the morning session, also using the supersoft tyre during some qualifying-style runs which left him nearly 0.7s adrift of Bottas.

Ferrari bounced back from Kimi Raikkonen's gearbox problems on the opening day with its biggest haul of laps so far this pre-season. Sebastian Vettel - who had earlier said he was not concerned by Ferrari's recent issues - completed 151 laps and focused on set-up work in the morning session, adding nearly 90 laps after lunch.

Another team to enjoy a strong day was McLaren, with Jenson Button completing 121 laps in the MP4-31. Button's time came on the soft compound tyre and racing director Eric Boullier said an upgraded power unit was providing a clear gain as the team worked through mapping work on Wednesday.

While the majority of teams enjoyed productive days, there were issues for both Sauber and Haas throughout the day. Sauber was confined to the garage for much of the morning session and then spinning off in the afternoon, limiting Marcus Ericsson to 55 laps in total. Ericsson did manage to improve his best lap on his final attempt of the day but still finished slowest of those to set a time.

Haas was the only team not to register a time as it only managed an installation lap due to a turbo issue. The team eventually conceded it would not run again with over two hours remaining in the day, leaving Esteban Gutierrez with just 24 laps to his name over what is currently scheduled to be his final two days in the car.
