Marchionne may be contemplating a takeover of Sauber by Alfa Romeo

Fiat Chrysler boss and Ferrari CEO Sergio Marchionne is open to Alfa Romeo returning as a manufacturer to Formula 1.

Marchionne apparently believes the historic brand's prestige could be boosted worldwide by an involvement once again in Grand Prix racing where it last competed in 1985.

"Formula 1 is the maximum technological expression of the automotive world and so considering the objectives of Alfa Romeo, I think the option of returning should be considered," said Marchionne in Shanghai, according to Italy's Autosprint.

"The Alfa myth was born with racing, and somehow we have to get it back there. When will it happen? I don't know."

One theory making the rounds, and apparently contemplated by Marchionne, is a takeover of Sauber.

The Swiss outfit which is powered by Ferrari has been struggling on the financial front for the past couple of years, and its current state of affairs does not look to be improving.

One caveat involving a takeover of the Hinwill-based team is the amount of debt currently burdening Sauber. It is rumored that while open to a buy-out, Marchionne would not be willing to assume any financial liabilities.

He was an early contributor to the monthly French F1i Magazine, often providing a historic or business perspective on Formula 1's affairs. In 2012, he co-authored along with fellow journalist Pierre Van Vliet the English-language adaptation of a limited edition book devoted to the great Belgian driver Jacky Ickx. He also authored "The American Legacy in Formula 1", a book which recounts the trials and tribulations of American drivers in Grand Prix racing.
