Permane declares Tsolov ‘next in line’ for F1 promotion

Racing Bulls team boss Alan Permane has declared Red Bull junior Nikolas Tsolov "next in line" for a promotion to Formula 1, offering the clearest indication yet that the FIA Formula 2 Championship leader is at the front of the team's succession plans.

The 19-year-old Bulgarian has enjoyed a breakout campaign in Formula 2, turning consistent speed into championship momentum.

With four feature race victories already this season, Tsolov heads the standings by 17 points and has steadily strengthened his case as one of Red Bull's brightest young talents.

Having already dismissed speculation that Tsolov had secured a Formula 1 promotion for 2027, Permane nevertheless made it abundantly clear that the youngster's performances have not gone unnoticed.

“He's doing incredibly well. I think this morning in Free Practice he was quickest,” Permane told reporters at Spa.

“He’s now leading the championship after his great weekend at Silverstone, so to say he's on the radar would be a little bit of an understatement. He’s next in line, I think is fair to say.

“When that will be, I don't know, honestly. It’s not an untruth to say we’re not thinking about it at the moment. He's there, he’s doing his job, we're doing our job, and we'll make a call if and when he comes up to Racing Bulls later this year.”

Those comments stop short of guaranteeing Tsolov a seat, but they leave little doubt about where he stands within Red Bull's succession plan.

The timing of any promotion remains uncertain, yet the message is unmistakable: if an opportunity opens, Tsolov is the driver waiting in the wings.

A waiting game for Racing Bulls

The uncertainty surrounding Racing Bulls' future line-up only adds to the intrigue.

Neither Liam Lawson nor Arvid Lindblad has been confirmed beyond the current campaign, leaving the team with decisions to make as the next chapter approaches.

Both drivers have strengthened their own credentials through a run of impressive performances, producing four consecutive weekends in which both cars finished in the points.

That form has lifted Racing Bulls into sixth place in the Constructors' Championship, just a single point adrift of Alpine as the battle to lead Formula 1's midfield intensifies.

While healthy competition has driven the team's progress, Permane acknowledged that keeping two evenly matched drivers pushing in the same direction presents its own challenge.

“It’s good to have two quick guys, that's for sure,” Permane summarised. “I’m sure there’ll be some management needed.

“They’re incredibly close – I think if you look at this morning, their ideal laps are separated by milliseconds, so it’s going to be nip and tuck all year.”

For now, Tsolov's own focus remains on completing his Formula 2 title challenge, but every victory strengthens the argument that he is ready for the next step.

Permane's remarks may not have settled Racing Bulls' driver puzzle, yet they have revealed the identity of the team's leading candidate should a vacancy emerge. In a driver market where speculation often outweighs certainty, that represents one of the clearest signals yet.

The final decision may still lie somewhere down the road, but the queue appears to have a clear leader ) and Nikolas Tsolov knows exactly where he stands.
