Cologne museum to host permanent Schumacher collection

A new museum, set to open in late 2017, will feature cars and memorabilia associated with the career of seven-time World Champion Michael Schumacher.

The Motorworld Cologne facility, located in Rhineland, has concluded an agreement with the Schumacher family to showcase a unique collection accessible to the general public on a permanent basis.

The distinguished and impressive collection shall include many race winning Formula 1 cars, sports cars, trophies, karts from Schumacher's early days and a vast array of personal memorabilia.

"It is the heart's desire of Michael's family that all interested fans should get to see his collection without having to pay an admission charge," said the German's manager, Sabine Kehm.

"It will enable them to revel in memories and bring those great times back to life again.

"The location’s proximity to Kerpen, and the passion for motoring that it radiates, were two other excellent reasons for this collaboration."

"It means a great deal to us to be able to honour Michael’s achievements in this manner and bring them so close to his fans," said Andreas Dunkel, initiator of the Motorworld concept which also organizes exhibits and events in Stuttgart, Munich and Berlin.

Motor racing was a backdrop from the outset in Phillip van Osten's life. Born in Southern California, Phillip grew up with the sights and sounds of fast cars thanks to his father, Dick van Osten, an editor and writer for Auto Speed and Sport and Motor Trend. Phillip's passion for racing grew even more when his family moved to Europe and he became acquainted with the extraordinary world of Grand Prix racing. He was an early contributor to the monthly French F1i Magazine, often providing a historic or business perspective on Formula 1's affairs. In 2012, he co-authored along with fellow journalist Pierre Van Vliet the English-language adaptation of a limited edition book devoted to the great Belgian driver Jacky Ickx. He also authored "The American Legacy in Formula 1", a book which recounts the trials and tribulations of American drivers in Grand Prix racing. Phillip is also a commentator for Belgian broadcaster Be.TV for the US Indycar series.
