The very popular Singapore Grand Prix event could disappear from the F1 calendar after its contract expires at the end of 2017 warns Bernie Ecclestone.
The venue, which has hosted Formula 1 since 2008, has always been one of the appreciated destinations among the Grand Prix community, not least because of its exhilarating atmosphere as a result of the race taking place under the floodlights of the Marina Bay circuit.
In an interview with Germany's Auto Motor und Sport, Ecclestone cast a serious doubt on Singapore's F1 future, believing the race's organizers would not extend its current contract beyond 2017.
"Look at what we have done for Singapore," Eccelstone said. "Yes, the Grand Prix has cost Singapore a lot of money, but we’ve also given them a lot of money.
"Singapore was suddenly more than just an airport to fly to or from somewhere. Now they believe they have reached their goal and they do not want a grand prix anymore.
Singapore suffered a drop in ticket sales this year, following a trend which has been seen across all Asian venues.
A spokesperson for the Singapore GP would not comment on the speculation, but said that no decision has been taken on extending its contract with FOM.
It was reported recently that Malaysia's organisers were also pondering dropping their event from the F1 calendar.
