Toro Rosso's efforts in Friday practice at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix were curtailed after Daniil Kvyat suffered two rear rim failures, with the team yet to fully understand the root cause of the issue.

The Russian first had to stop his car in FP1 after he could not limp back home following what was then thought to be only a puncture.

However, when the same problem sent Kvyat spinning at high speed in the second practice, it was decided not to have him, nor his team-mate Carlos Sainz back out on track.

FIA Formula One Technical Delegate Jo Bauer could be seen in the Toro Rosso garage, while the team was busy investigating the problem.

“After facing two failures on the rear rim of Daniil’s car, it was decided to avoid sending Carlos out on track again because we still haven’t understood 100% where the problem is coming from,” team principal Franz Tost said in a statement.

“We will now work hard tonight, together with the engineers back in Faenza, and hopefully we will sort it out for tomorrow.”

Kvyat only completed five laps in the early afternoon, before adding a mere four tours in the evening. Sainz, for his part, had 25 laps across the two sessions.
