Kaltenborn hopeful Liberty Media will tackle F1's inequities

Sauber boss Monisha Kaltenborn believes that Liberty Media's governance of Formula 1 will be economically favourable to the smaller teams.

Sauber and Force India have been at the forefront of a battle to change the sport's prize money distribution and it's decision-making process, even arguing its case to the European Union last year which has led the institution to initiate a review process which is still underway.

"I am confident that the EU is looking very closely at this because, in principle, the answer to the question of whether the competition is distorted or not is relatively simple," explained Kaltenborn.

"We will continue to push this forward, and we think that something will happen."

Regardless of the Commission's ongoing process, Kaltenborn has already taken the matter up with Formula 1's new owner.

"Together with Force India, we have already started to discuss it with Liberty. For the first time, we have an owner who comes from the media sector and someone who has made very successful investments in other areas.

"In some series, the smaller teams have certain rights that demonstrate the importance of these smaller teams, so I believe that a good dialogue will develop."

Motor racing was a backdrop from the outset in Phillip van Osten's life. Born in Southern California, Phillip grew up with the sights and sounds of fast cars thanks to his father, Dick van Osten, an editor and writer for Auto Speed and Sport and Motor Trend. Phillip's passion for racing grew even more when his family moved to Europe and he became acquainted with the extraordinary world of Grand Prix racing. He was an early contributor to the monthly French F1i Magazine, often providing a historic or business perspective on Formula 1's affairs. In 2012, he co-authored along with fellow journalist Pierre Van Vliet the English-language adaptation of a limited edition book devoted to the great Belgian driver Jacky Ickx. He also authored "The American Legacy in Formula 1", a book which recounts the trials and tribulations of American drivers in Grand Prix racing. Phillip is also a commentator for Belgian broadcaster Be.TV for the US Indycar series.
