With its takeover of Formula 1, Liberty Media also inherited control of the GP2 support series and is now considering relabeling the feeder championship 'Formula 2'.
Reverting to the historic F2 name has always been the FIA's wish, but negotiations between the governing body and Bernie Ecclestone failed to rebrand the series.
Ecclestone's exit from F1 could now clear the path for a swift name change, according to Autosport.
In its takeover, Liberty Media also gained access to the GP3 series, and junior categories are expected to remain under the organisation structure managed by Bruno Michel.
The majority of GP2's champions have eventually gone on to race in Formula 1, although winning the series doesn't provide a clear pass to the pinnacle of motorsport.
Davide Valsecchi and Fabio Leimer, who were crowned champions in 2012 and 2013, never became Grand Prix drivers while last year's winner, Pierre Gasly, remains in the wings at Red Bull but has yet to race in F1.
Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg are the only former GP2 champions who went on to win a world title in Formula 1.
